Material names are useful, but a resin acronym alone cannot tell you whether a package is suitable for a specific formula, decoration process or market. The grade, component design and product-contact path must also be considered.

PP: versatile and commonly used

Polypropylene is used across caps, jars, inner parts and dispensing components. Its flexibility, processability and chemical-resistance profile can make it useful in many systems, but the grade, part design and formula contact still matter.

PET: clear and familiar

PET is widely associated with clear bottles and strong visual clarity. Design, wall distribution, manufacturing method and formula compatibility influence the finished result. Recycled-content options require project-specific confirmation.

PETG: clarity and design flexibility

PETG can offer high clarity and useful forming or molding characteristics for certain premium-looking components. Scratch behavior, chemical exposure, decoration and local recycling acceptance should be checked for the actual specification.

ABS: often selected for rigid outer parts

ABS is commonly considered for rigid decorative housings, caps and shells where appearance and dimensional stability matter. It is not automatically the right choice for direct formula contact; confirm the construction and contact path.

Ask better material questions

  • What resin family and grade are used?
  • Which parts directly contact the formula?
  • Is the material compatible with the intended decoration?
  • What documentation is available from the supplier?
  • What testing is required for the formula and target market?
Share the component type, formula category and target market. Lulu Beauty Works can help gather supplier information and compare material routes as part of packaging development.

Frequently Asked

Questions

Is PET always suitable for cosmetic formulas?
No material is universally suitable. The actual resin grade, package design, formula and test conditions must be reviewed together.
Is ABS normally used for direct formula contact?
ABS is often considered for rigid decorative outer parts, but the specific construction and product-contact path should always be confirmed.
Does a recycled-content claim require documentation?
Yes. Recycled-content and sustainability claims should be specific, supported by relevant documentation and suitable for the target market.
